Barcelona is a city and metropolis on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. It is the quintessential capital of Catalonia and also of the autonomous region, the province of Barcelona and the region of Barcelonès, and the second most populated city and with more economic weight of the Iberian Peninsula. The town grows on a plain wedged between the coastal mountain range, the Mediterranean Sea, the river Besòs and Montjuïc Mountain. The city hosts the headquarters of the most important institutions of self-government of Catalonia: the Catalan Government and the Parliament of Catalonia.
With a population of over 1.5 million habitants, Barcelona is the most populous city of Catalonia and the eleventh in EU, second non-capital city after Hamburg. It is the main center of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, comprising 36 municipalities. A study made by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the UN in 2005 placed Barcelona at position 51 in the ranking of cities with the highest number of people in the world.
The capital of Catalonia has been the scene of several international events, which have contributed to strengthen it, develop it and give it a global projection. These include the 1888 Universal Exhibition, the International Exhibition of 1929, the 1992 Olympic Games and the Universal Forum of Cultures in 2004.
Barcelona is recognized as a global city for its culture, finances, commerce and tourism. It has one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean and is also an important point of communication between Spain and France, due to motorway connections and high-speed rail. Barcelona Airport now exceeds 37 million passengers annually.
