THE XVIII MEDITERRANEAN GAMES HAVE BEEN INAUGURATED
Tarragona Nou Estadi brings together more than 9.000 people in the Opening Ceremonycategory: ICMG
On Friday, June 22nd the XVIII Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018 have been inaugurated. The opening event, held in Tarragona Nou Estadi, has gathered more than 9.000 people that have witnessed the official opening of the Games.
Chaired by His Majesty Felipe VI, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, the President of Generalitat de Catalunya, Quim Torra, the President of the International Committee of the Mediterranea Games, Amar Addadi, the Mayor of Tarragona, Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, and the President of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blanco, were also present in the official box.
The show, carried out by FOCUS enterprise, had as a main thread the mixture of cultures embodied by the Mediterranean sea and the cultural, historical past of Tarragona which, by means of stones and water, have recalled the Roman Tarraco.
The 26 delegations have paraded along the Nou Estadi together with dancers holding a water basin, which later on has been poured onto a big fountain with the shape of hands, a symbol of the union among the Mediterranean people, a sea between different lands.
Amar Addadi and the Mayor Ballesteros have pronounced their protocolary speeches in which they have remarked the values of sport as a connecting link among cultures. Lydia Valentín, weightlifting world’s champion, has been chosen to make the oath on behalf of the athletes.
The Cuba-born singer Lucrecia and the Barcelona-born Antonio Orozco, as well as the singer Begoña Alberdi, have been in charge of the musical performances for a soirée in which peace, union and fraternity were the main message.
The event was attended and assisted by 800 volunteers of the Mediterranean Games, 2 500 athletes and more than 200 journalists, and it has been broadcast live on TV3, Teledeporte and Tac12 (Xarxa of Catalonia Local Televisions).
