This afternoon in Tarragona the team competitions matches draw of Tarragona 2018 has taken place for the waterpolo, handball, volleyball and football competition. Representatives from each sport discipline have attended the event in order to draw the balls: the former Olympic swimmer, Sylvia Fontana, the trainer and player of Club Voleibol Sant Pere i Sant Pau, Vlado Stevovski, the coaches of the Spanish handball team, Jordi Ribera (men’s team) and Carlos Vivier (women’s team), and the former football player Felip Ortiz. All the National Olympic Committees participating in the team competitions already know their matches for the Mediterranean Games. Tarragona’s team competitions draw has been supported by the Spanish State Lotteries, official partner of the Games.
Update of the sports programme
The International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) has held in Tarragona the last coordination meetings before the celebration of the XVIII Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018. In these meetings, the ICMG, lead by the President Amar Addadi, has approved the last changes relating to Games sports calendar, after the closing of the entry by names process last April.
Due to the large number of athletes entries, the Organising Committee has decided to extend the calendar of the handball competition, which will start a day before the planned date so that all the teams can participate. This discipline shows a historical participation record both in men’s and women’s competition. The new dates for the competition are June 23rd and July 1st.
The ICMG has also accepted the proposal of splitting the venues for the volleyball competition. This sport will be celebrated in Tarraco Arena Plaza, the only venue planned according to the estimations of the two former competitions, and in Serrallo Pavilion, which will host the qualifying rounds for the feminine competition.
The ICMG President, Amar Addadi, has stated that he faces this final sprint calmly and with full trust on the Organising Committee after the great job they have been doing. He has highlighted the great deal of athletes entries “which seems to be a participation record in Tarragona 2018. We want these Games to be a success and an example for everybody”.The Mayor of Tarragona and the President of the Organising Committee of the Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018, Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, has highlighted the calm attitude and the responsibility they show to face the arrival of the Mediterranean Games to Tarragona and the surrounding area. Ballesteros expressed his feeling of satisfaction since the Games have become “an inspiring, common and inclusive project for all the Tarragona’s surrounding area”.
