Spain and Italy obtain the first victories in the qualifying rounds of women’s waterpolo

For the first time a women's waterpolo competition will be played in the Mediterranean Games.

This morning the women’s waterpolo competition has started in the XVIII Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018 with two high-level matches in the Aquatic Centre of the Mediterranean Ring.  

France, Greece, Italy and Spain’s teams have competed this morning in the swimming pool of Campclar Aquatic Centre. In the first match, held at 09:30, the Italian and French teams have played with a final score of 11 – 3 respectively.

In the second competition, Greece and Spain have played a tight match in which Spain has finally won, with a score of 9 – 8. During the next days there rest of the matches will be decisive for the final competitions that will be played on June 30th.  

For the first time women’s waterpolo enters in the schedule of the Mediterranean Games and the debut has been done with the best teams of their respective countries.

Spain is the current world runner-up. In world championships, Italy has two gold medals and Greece is closely behind with one.

This afternoon the first rounds for men’s modality will be played until July, 1st, the day of the finals.
