The second largest country in Africa has more than 1,000 kilometres of coastline washed by the Mediterranean Sea. In spite of this, the country is characterized by a large elongated plateau, in which are many depressions. The Atlas Mountains and the Sahara desert are a big attraction in the country, offering a varied relief to its geography.

The country has a great archaeological heritage, with seven locations that have been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. It is also one of the most modern countries of the African continent, and encompasses a wide cultural and ethnic variety. There is a marked difference between the North and the South of the country. The European cultural influence is more present in the northern part of Algeria, while in the south they live in a more traditional way.
The sale of carpets, jewelry, tapestries and traditional costumes is common in markets. This practice adds additional charm to the country, as well as its people do.
