The State Government announces an investment of 10.5 million euros for the Mediterranean Games

During the meeting of the Organizing Committee of the 2018 Mediterranean Games held today in our city, under the chairmanship of the mayor and director of the Games, Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, it has been announced that the Spanish government will invest 10.5 million euros for this sporting event; to this amount must be included 2.5 million euros that were already provided by the High Sports Council (HSC) in 2016 and 2 million from the sponsorship by the National Lottery and Gambling Agency. Overall, a sum of 15 million euro will be provided by the government. This is what has been stated by the general sports director of the HSC, Jaime González Castaño, in the meeting of the Organizing Committee of the Games that has been held in the City Council of Tarragona. Jaime González Castaño has also observed that the financial contribution is subject to the approval of the General State Budget for 2017, as well as the fact that the Spanish government is complying with the commitments made.
It must be noted that the Games were declared “Event of Exceptional Public Interest”, meaning that the companies involved have tax exemptions up to 90% for any private investment in the Mediterranean Games.
The financial contribution by the HSC has been highly appreciated by the mayor, Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, who has stated that it is excellent news and that “the Games will certainly be a reality; we are in a position to make the best Games ever”. The mayor has welcomed the efforts of the attendants and has highlighted that, despite the postponement of the Games, the institutions that form the Organizing Committee have reaffirmed its commitment to carry them out.
The president of the HSC, Alejandro Blanco, was also satisfied because “we are in a condition to fulfil what we had announced” and has thanked all institutions for their collaboration.
The president of the Provincial Council of Tarragona, Josep Poblet, has reminded that the Games will have 14 venues in the province of Tarragona, in addition to the Barcelona province, and has added: “we are committed to the Games and the unity of action will guarantee their success”.
The representative of the Government of Catalonia, Òscar Peris, has underlined that the construction of the Sports Hall is progressing on schedule and that the Generalitat will continue working with the City Council in all aspects required, such as security, mobility, health, etc., for the Mediterranean Games to be a success.
The Organizing Committee of the Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018 is formed by the representatives of different institutions: City Council, state government, Generalitat of Catalonia, Provincial Council of Tarragona, Provincial council of Barcelona, Spanish Olympic Committee and International Olympic Committee.
Apart from holding the meeting, the Organizing Committee has visited the construction site of the Mediterranean Ring.
