The Spanish Government formalizes the collaboration agreement for the financing of the Mediterranean Games

The Mayor of Tarragona, Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, and the Vice-President of the Spanish Government, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, have formalized the collaboration agreement between the Consejo Superior de Deportes and the government of Tarragona for the financing of the XVIII Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018. The act, which has also been attended by the Minister of Finance and Public Function, Cristóbal Montoro, and the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, took place in the Sarcophagus Room of the “Pretorio” in Tarragona.
The agreement foresees the inclusion in the draft budgets of the years 2017 and 2018 a global subsidy of 10,5M€ which must allow to cover different investments and to face the operational budget of the sport competition. Specifically, for the 2017 financial year, a subsidy of 6.75 million euros is foreseen, while a subsidy of 3.75 million euros is for 2018. In parallel, the Superior Council of Sports will process the extension of the Mediterranean Games as an event of exceptional public interest, which brings tax benefits for the sponsoring companies until December 31, 2018.
In his speech, Mayor Josep Fèlix Ballesteros remarked that the act “is a turning point as it definitively formalizes and guarantees the Government’s total support for the Games.” “This route would have been impossible if we had not always counted from the first minute the institutional loyalty of the Government of Spain, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Provincial Councils of Tarragona and Barcelona and the 16 municipalities that are the venues of the Games”. Finally, Ballesteros remarked that “we want to show that Tarragona, Catalonia and Spain are a peaceful and solidarity meeting point, symbol of dialogue and effective cooperation, with respect to cultural and religious diversity that will meet within a year in our City for 10 days”.
Vice-President Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría stressed the commitment of the state government and “unity and cooperation among public institutions” and stressed that the Mediterranean Games “are an opportunity for Tarragona to position itself as a benchmark in the organization of events Sports “.
