Volleyball is a team sport which consists in throwing a ball to the opponent over a high net located in the middle of the field, by striking it before it touches the ground. The ball must be kept in motion all the time, meaning that it can only be touched or knocked flat, mainly with the hands, but all body parts are allowed. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court under organized rules. The aim of volleyball is to win 3 out of the 5 sets of the match.
Volleyball started being part of the Mediterranean Games’ sports programme in 1959 in Beirut (Lebanon).
