Beach volleyball is a variation of volleyball that is played on beaches or sand courts. Beach volleyball was first played in the beaches of Santa Monica, in California, around the year 1920. In the 60s and 70s it started to be included in professional competitions.
Beach volleyball regulations are very similar to those of indoor volleyball. Apart from the type of surface, the most important difference is that teams consist of two players instead of six. It is also common to find teams of 3 and 4 players, especially in leisure competitions.
This sport was first present in the Mediterranean Games in 2005, in the edition celebrated in Almería (Spain).
