Tennis is a racquet sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racquet to strike a ball over a net and into the opponent’s court in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a good return.
The modern game of tennis originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century. Tennis started being part of the Mediterranean Games’ sports programme in 1963 in Naples (Italy).
