Swimming consists in moving through the water’s surface by using the arms and legs. This sport entered in the sports program in the first Mediterranean Games, held in Alexandria (Egypt) in 1951. It is contested in the four classic styles: front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.
In front crawl, swimmers take alternate overhand arm strokes. It is the fastest style. Backstroke is the same style but it is performed on the swimmer’s back. In breaststroke, swimmers move the arms in horizontal circles and perform frog kicks in order to move.
In Tarragona 2018 the swimming competition will also include the 100-meter paralympic competition in freestyle S10.
