Judo (meaning “gentle way”) is a Japanese martial art created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. It was developed from Jujutsu, avoiding dangerous or useless techniques, thus making possible to practice it in randori or free style. Kano’s objective was the improvement of people through its practice. Judo has become a competitive sport which nowadays is highly regarded worldwide.
Judo’s techniques are mainly throwing, immobilizations, joint locks and chokes. Judo today has lost most of its original chivalry and purity of technique in favour of its competitive element.
Judo was introduced in the Mediterranean Games of 1971 in İzmir (Turkey).
