Artistic gymnastics is a discipline of gymnastics where athletes perform short routines on different apparatus. The sport is governed by the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG).
Both male and female gymnasts are judged on all events for execution, degree of difficulty, and overall presentation skills. Men and women take part in vault and floor exercises competitions. Men’s artistic gymnastics includes exercises that are done with the following devices: pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars and high bar. And women’s artistic gymnastics includes uneven bars and balance beam.
Artistic gymnastics was introduced in the Mediterranean Games’ sports programme in 1951 in Alexandria (Egypt).
