Fencing is a combat sport in which two contenders confront each other trying to touch the opponent with a bladed weapon, according to which three events can be distinguished: foil, épée and sabre.
When a contender is touched by the weapon (in French “touché”), the opponent gets one point.
As a sports discipline it began in the end of the 19th century, when swords ceased to be used as combat arms.
Fencing belongs to the Mediterranean Games sports programme since its first edition, which was held in the city of Alexandria (Egypt) in 1951. It is the only Olympic sports of Spanish origin.
