Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that are usually classified in three big blocks: races (speed, middle distance, long distance, obstacles, race walking and relays), contests (jumping and throws) and combined events (decathlon, heptathlon).
The most common places for athletic competitions are tracks, fields and roads. The results of foot racing events are typically decided by finishing position, while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. Athletics has existed for thousands of years, in fact it is considered the oldest sport of the world. The first evidences of athletic competitions date back to the times of ancient civilizations.
Athletics started being part of the Mediterranean Games’ sports programme in 1951 in Alexandria (Egypt).
